Proiezione Stellare

The perspectival illusion tricked man for ages. In the past, we identified constellations as if the light points in the sky would be mounted on a curved surface; then we discovered that stars have very different distance and brightness, and only our point of view makes them appear as uniformly populating the space around the Earth.

Proiezione stellare (“star projection”) is an effort to further subvert this vision. The constellation of Hercules, which will pass, during summer, above the location of the installation, is used as the projection of a three-dimensional human artifact. The projection of the image does not develop anymore from the sky to the ground, but vice-versa; it’s the human intervention which tries to justify the placement of stars, by means of an unstable artifact that, swinging on the flowing water, tries to follow the apparent motion of the celestial bodies, as science tries to pursue nature.

L’illusione prospettica ha indotto per secoli l’uomo a identificare le costellazioni come se i punti luminosi nel cielo sopra di noi fossero incastonati in una superficie equidistante dalla terra; abbiamo poi scoperto che le stelle hanno distanze e luminosità molto diverse fra di loro, e solo la relatività del nostro punto di vista ce le fa apparire come uniformemente sparse per lo spazio attorno alla Terra.

Proiezione stellare è un tentativo di ribaltare ulteriormente questa visione: la pianta della costellazione di Ercole (che passerà nelle sere d’estate sopra la location dell’installazione) viene utilizzata come se fosse una proiezione di un artefatto umano tridimensionale. La proiezione dell’immagine non si sviluppa più dal cielo alla terra, ma viceversa; è l’intervento umano che tenta di giustificare la disposizione delle stelle, con un artefatto instabile che, ondeggiando insieme all’acqua corrente, prova a seguirne il moto apparente così come la scienza insegue la natura.
